Should You Title Your College Application Essay, Essay Hell, do college essays have titles.3/29/2017 As an independent college admissions consultant essay topics for problem solution essays, I read many application essays and see many common application essay mistakes. Here’s some helpful advice: After you’ve collected your massive list of title ideas, it’s time to evaluate. A good title will accurately reflect what the piece is about without emphasizing the wrong ideas or giving away too much. A great title will actually add something to the essay. So how do you come up with a title worthy of your essay? The first thing to do is to, well, hold off. The title should start your essay, but you should start your essay before you consider titles. Often it’s far easier to title a piece after you’ve written the whole thing. In the sundae that is the excellent essay, the title is the cherry on top essays on film reviews, not the foundational chocolate ice cream. A title can sum up what you’ve written in a few choice words, or even draw attention to a certain part of the piece that you want emphasized. But you can’t sum something up, or emphasize a certain part, if there’s nothing to summarize or emphasize yet. The best thing to do is to wait until you’ve mostly completed the essay, and then it will be much easier to come to come up with some options. An argument and persuasion paper provides an ideal opportunity for a good title. This type of paper requires you to have an opinion on a topic or issue. A paper about teaching creationism in schools could be titled "Genesis or Darwin? Which Should be Taught?" Good titles for debate-type papers attempt to include both sides of an issue. Combine two key terms from your paper as effective title components. A paper about toxic food additives and poor diet could be titled: "Environmental Toxins and Harmful Health Habits." In a literature class, a paper about Emily Dickinson's poems and her isolated life could be titled: "Dickenson's Poems and Her Solitary Life." For political science, a paper about voter ID laws and voting rights might be titled: "Current Voting Restrictions and the Voting Rights Act."
