It may be possible to use only one paragraph for your introduction, but it may fall more easily into two or more. You will need to adapt and extend this basic structure to fit with your own discipline and the precise task set. Footnotes should be used, if at all, only to add additional comments that stand well outside the main thread of the body of the text. Originality is one of the hardest things to achieve in an essay, but any effort you make at being original will be noticed by the marker.
